i have a tattoo of the alphabet on my forearm. most people ask something snarky about it ("is that so you can do it backwards?" or "did you get that so you can be a whiz at scrabble?" or "are you sure all the letters are there?") but a few people, i think 4 so far, have asked me what font it's written in. and i like that question the best. and then i get to tell them that the tattoo artist made up the font himself. he wrote it himself.

i went to see coldplay on monday night and it was one of the better big concerts i've ever been to. really entertaining and fun and the guys in the band were charming and personable. and they changed some song lyrics to suit the bay area and it was a fun time.

i saw "harry potter" and "bruno" this week. i loved harry potter, of course, and i thought bruno was funny. not hilarious. just funny.

i've been sleeping really well the last three days without the use of ambien. that hasn't been the case for at least the last few months. so i'm glad for it.

this weekend i'm going to do a whole bunch of nothing. sunday will be spent sitting in the park. doing nothing outside.

i like not having any definite plans. it's suiting my mood right now.
Political Notebook: Speier confident ENDA will pass

ENDA-Unconfirmed U.S. Legislator of the Day: Mario Diaz-Balart

Fri Jul 17, 2009 at 06:41:26 AM PDT

Yesterday we sent about 130 emails to Rep. Donnelly regarding ENDA, HR 3017. A phone call to his office at the end of the day suggests he is still undecided. You might want to call him at 574-288-2780. And now...

Today's LEGISLATOR OF THE DAY

* * * drum roll * * *
Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart of Florida

In many ways a staunch Republican on social issues, he is a fair-minded one when it comes to jobs, voting for ENDA in 07. But he's playing it close to the vest on HR 3017 this time around. He needs a little tug to loosen that vest.

Please email him at http://bit.ly/... His zip code is 33175-3436.

Tel: 305-225-6866

And while you're at it, call your own Members of Congress once in a while. You never call, you never write... http://bit.ly/...

drjillygirl's diary :: ::
According to Wikipedia, Diaz-Balart is the son of the late Cuban politician Rafael Diaz-Balart. His aunt, Mirta Diaz-Balart, was the first wife of Fidel Castro. Her son, and his cousin, is Fidel Ángel "Fidelito" Castro Díaz-Balart. His uncle is the Cuban-Spanish painter, Waldo Diaz-Balart. His brother, Lincoln Diaz-Balart, is also a congressman, representing the 21st district of Florida. He currently lives in Miami with his wife and son.

Mario Diaz-Balart's voting record is somewhat more conservative than that of the other two Cuban-Americans who represent Miami--Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (a co-sponsor of ENDA this year) and his elder brother (Lincoln). During his first three terms, he was one of two voting Latino members of the House--the other being Trent Franks of Arizona -- known to be a member of the conservative Republican Study Committee.

He is a founding member of the Congressional Hispanic Conference, a caucus of Hispanic Republican congressmen.

His reelection in 2008 was by the fairly small margin of 53-47 against his Democratic challenger.

He voted yes on the previous hate crimes bill, and yes on ENDA in 2007.

Happy 6th Birthday, Matthew!

Time and growth. Change and evolution. Boy, you are a constant work in progress, and it will be very intriguing to see just what you will become. But the answer to that question can take its own sweet time, so if you'll permit me, I'll slow down the hands on the clock for a while to let you know where you are right now.

This being summer, you are a swimmer! The day last year when you finally put your face in and got under the water was a triumphant day. I was so proud of you that day, I scooped you up in my arms right after practice, wet swimsuit and all. Now another summer is here and you jump in, dive, swim without any apprehension. You explore the deep end of the pool this year, as opposed to just floating on the surface. Though your technique needs work (you still need to remember to move both arms and feet), I can only marvel at what you're doing at this age when I myself was afraid of the water.

You entered the kindergarten classroom and immediately became one of the teacher's favorites, not to mention a favorite of the girls as well! No crying, sadness, or clinging to mom - though you might have been a little afraid, true to fashion, you but on a brave face and discovered kindergarten was not all that bad. In fact, it was a lot of fun. The crowning achievement was Open House night when you took us on a tour of your ocean-themed room. At the fund raising for the kindergarten circus performance, you were the peanut seller (with the help of your 5th grade buddy).

And at the end of the school year, you delighted us both by reading to us voluntarily. If fact, I dare say that you have now taken over story time before your bed time all on your own. I sit in wonder at the words that you read and wonder just where in the world you picked them up - multi-syllabic words like "fantastic" or "suggested". You can sit, undaunted, at a harder book and read aloud for 15 minutes, but you are not so stubborn that you don't hand over the book sometimes so Dad can carefully take the wheel for the rest of the story.

The TV you watch has changed a lot. No more Mister Rogers, Thomas the Tank Engine, or Bob the Builder. You enjoy Arther and Fetch! and remain a PBS kid. Videos from the weekly library trip get checked out, old favorites from when you were 3, but you watch them less. Now that you are a reader, you have been checking out Mercer Mayer's Little Critter stories.

You still love sports. The Ducks are your favorite hockey team. The Angels are your favorite baseball team. The Lakers recently became a favorite, especially after they won the championship this year. You like the winners. Just don't forget what Dad told you about sticking with your team in good times and bad.

You are all about the Legos - Power Miners, City, etc. I don't have to hover over while you build anymore. Chances are you get it right the first time, even when the box is above your age. Your Thomas trains don't get played with anymore, but you refuse to give them up. That's okay. The time will come when we will put them in a bin for your son. You love to play games - no stress chess is a favorite. Sadly, you have not put together puzzles in a very long time.

You are very adult oriented and you will speak to them as if on equal terms - to the surprise of some, and sometimes to the consternation of your Mom and Dad. Your approach to things unfamiliar is always the same - you stop, you ponder the next move, and then you plunge right in. You carry with you the unerring sense of confidence that you'll get through whatever you're encountering, but it's interesting to note that you will look back sometimes for Mom and Dad, just in case something scares you. Your first plane ride this year to Miami en route to a Ships & Dips cruise is a prime example of this.

However, sometimes that confidence leads to arrogance, and a stubborness towards your mother. Sometimes, it leads to arms folded and a scowl toward my direction, as if we have the audacity to take an opposing position. You can be competitive to a fault, especially now that we have a wii video game system. And yet, there was one fateful day where you submissively concluded that we were better than you. No son, we are not. We are all here together for each other, but we have to remember to listen and follow each other.

That last clause has been my own little challenge. Sometimes you go off toward something and it scares me terribly, like riding too far too fast ahead of me on your bike. And sometimes, I have to clamp down on myself and let you grow, like when you want to somersault and thrash around the shallow end of the pool.

My greatest challenge is to avoid filling you with all the fear that I was filled with at your age, which left me afraid to try anything for a very long time.

Sometimes I see you in me. Sometimes, your mom. Other times, I see your Grandfather Morgan make an appearance. You are a composite sketch of all of us I suppose, and yet you are unique.

Whatever you get into, wherever you go, I'll still remain the "fixer" of broken toys, your swim buddy, Rockband bandmate, confidant, advisor, playmate, helper, provider, and above all, your father.

So where are we going, son? Wherever it is, let's all go together. :)

BART Bike Parking

Is the Civic Center BART area a safe place to park my bike? (I 'm not even sure if they have indoor stations there although I know I have seen them at other stations) My bike is old and it has one of those twisty locks as opposed to a nice, U-Lock.

the house is comming along very slowly. i haven't worked on it much the past few days, because i've been going out with friends. it will get done. i just have to keep telling myself that.

sometimes i wonder.

  • Jul. 13th, 2009 at 1:00 PM
do people stalk me on facebook/myspace/livejournal/google/ad nauseum as often (or even nearly as often) as i stalk them?

i'm not even talking about anyone in particular. but i find myself clicking through a lot of people's info. web sites linked from facebook pages. myspace pages linked from web sites.

most of them are people i know/once knew.

i wonder how often it's reciprocated.

my faith has been restored

  • Jul. 12th, 2009 at 11:02 PM
the indigo girls put on a fantastic show last night in san luis obispo. by far the best i've seen in over two years. i am so glad that i sucked it up and went. i'd be kicking myself had i missed that one. highlights: faye tucker, salty south, true romantic (still not a fan of the lyrics, but sold sold sold on it live), deconstruction, fugitive, and more.

setlist is not within reachable distance, and i am quite lazy at the moment. i will post that eventually. no photos (except for a crappy iphone upload to my facebook) - my camera was in kentucky at a black crowes show.

i'm actually excited for the rest of the indigo girls shows this summer. really really really excited.

Looking for Lesbian Venues

  • Jul. 12th, 2009 at 1:30 PM
Hi. I'd like recommendations for lesbian-only clubs/meetings/etc. pretty much anywhere in the Bay Area that are not just social groups - something like knitting clubs, book clubs, musician ensembles, foreign language practice groups - basically groups that have an intellectual or musical/crafts arts focus. Also, if you happen to know something about the group membership, I'd greatly prefer something that is at least somewhat ethnically diverse.

Thanks.

Train Wars.

  • Jul. 11th, 2009 at 1:31 PM
Wow, the trains are toot-y around here today. Usually we hear some whistle blows but just sitting here in the last 15 min I heard a lot of different blows. I think I should remember to ask grampa what all the blows mean(while he still is here to tell me;-(, long, short and such. I think that is the loudest and most horns I have heard in a while. I actually thought the tornado sirens where sounding when I got up. Weird. Must be a busy train day. Sounded like trains playing chicken.

Random, I know.
